New Toy, New Joy: a 27" iMac
Posted by Theo Heselmans on October 28th, 2009
As I wanted more screen real estate to do decent XPages development, I just couldn't resist this beauty.
An incredibly huge and bright 27" screen (2560x1440 !!).
I installed Parallels and Windows 7.
Notes 8.5.1 development won't be the same again !
To put things in perspective, I took a picture of my new setup:
Look at the 'small' 15" Macbook Pro, and my previous 'big' 19" screen on the left !
The same XPage is open on both machines on the right.
Notice that I haven't even gone to full screen mode on the iMac...
Still got so much to explore, learn and install, but I have to leave for the NLLUG event in Amsterdam today.
Hope my new toy is still there on Saturday ;-)

Congrats on your new machine. Bigger is better for Designer IDE work.
How do you like the new mouse?
@David,
Well, I've been using it only for a couple of hours now (the iMac was delivered last night), and my first impressions are positive. It is a big screen though, and it's a long cursor walk from left to right !
It is a relative small mouse, to be touched by a couple of fingers only, not your whole hand. Scrolling with the sensitive surface is smooth, and you get used to it rapidly. The mouse is heavier than you would expect.
Apple was never famous for good mice, so let's hold the final judgement for a couple of weeks ;-)
I'm ordering one for Christmas, :)
Nice one Theo, congrats. I heard yesterday that you can easily use it as an external monitor for another input source, presumably including a TV/cable tuner, DVD, or game console. My concern is that the resolution is so much higher even than 1080p/Bluray, that watching such media on it would actually not look that great at full screen.
I'd love to hear about any experiences you might have in that area.
@Albert: You won't regret it !
@Kevin: I started a HD movie on it today (1080p a .m2ts), and it looked astonishing.
Be careful regarding using the screen as an external monitor. You can (for the moment) only connect another device with a displayport (such as a modern Macbook).
Rumors have spread that you could possibly use it e.g. with a blue-ray player, but there's no hdmi support. Maybe in the future, when there are 'converter' cables.
Even Apple currently does not have a male-male displayport cable (3rd parties do).
So Theo you had a 1080p movie file (non blu ray disk) that looked great at full screen? If so that would bode well for viewing downloaded or ripped content at least. I'm still wondering about directly connecting a PS3 to the sucker as all the references to adapters seem to relate to Displayport output to HDMI input, when I want the opposite.
I was having problems resisting the 27" beauty anyway, but seeing that photo of your desk has made me even more keen.
I wonder how much our 24" 3.06GHz is worth now? ;-)
