Image:Shiraz Rocks !Shiraz (or Syrah as the French call it) is by far my favorite grape. The wines are usually of such intensity. The nose is spicy and fruity at the same time. Everywhere in the world great stuff is being made based on Shiraz. But only in Australia this varietal really rocks!
So I was more than pleased of being invited by Wijnkennis to participate in tasting and evaluating over 20 different Australian Shiraz. Wim managed to collect a great selection. After everyone had (blind)tasted each one, we 'unwrapped' the bottles, only to discover that most of the wines I liked particularly, I had bought in the past.
Here's my favorites of the evening:

  • Grant Burge "Miamba" (Barossa Valley) 2005
  • Ross Estate (Barossa Valley) 2002
  • Evans & Tate (Margaret River) 2002
  • D'Arenberg "The Laughing Magpie" (Mc Laren Vale) 2004
  • Grant Burge "Filsell" (Barossa Valley) 2004
  • D'Arenberg "The Dead Arm" (Mc Laren Vale) 2002
I'm a big fan of Grant Burge. Whatever this guy produces (and he's got a wide variety) is top-notch.
D'Arenberg makes wonderful wine too, but their prices are a bit too high.
I've bought Evans & Tate in the past too, but Ross Estate was completely unknown to me.
Here's the list of wines we evaluated, with their average score: AustralianShiraz.xls
